DE Diatomaceous Earth

All Diatomaceous Earth is not the same.

Where can I find Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth packaged under our FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® label comes from an extremely pure fresh water deposit of the diatom Aulacoseira from a deposit created in the Miocene epoch. Why is this diatom so special? Its shell is made of amorphous silica. Its shape and hardness are important to how it works. Its hardness keeps it from dissolving in liquid. The holes along the diatom’s wall allow it to absorb moisture, hence its use as an anti-caking agent. Darker colored Diatomaceous Earth often contains an excess of a particular mineral such as iron or a high percentage of clay.

FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® is almost pure white and consists of 89% ( and sometimes more) Silicon Dioxide plus 28 trace minerals which means more diatom surface area is available. More diatom area means greater absorptive capacity and more improvement in the mixability and flowability of animal feed. FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® does not swell, does not absorb nutrients and poses no long term hazard when used as an anti-caking agent in your animal’s feed.

What is Diatomaceous Earth

Why fresh water vs. salt water Diatomaceous Earth?

Fresh water deposits like ours have a consistent diatom presence. Their fossilized shells have maintained their tubular shape. This shape and strength of the fossil shell is critical to its effectiveness. Our deposit has 89 – 95 percent amorphous silica content. This deposit is also more consistent in its purity of other elements that have settled in it. A fresh water deposit is confined to the run off water of its surrounding environment. A fresh water deposit in the mountains, such as ours, formed when snow was pure and its run off provided the water source these diatoms lived in. Salt water deposits contain a mix of types of diatoms of different shapes. Their fossilized shells are fragile and break easily. This renders them ineffective for our purposes. The salt water deposits are less predictable in their sediments.

What’s the difference between amorphous and crystalline silica?

Where can you buy Diatomaceous Earth

Amorphous (click here for definition) silica is silica in its natural occurring state. It is a trace mineral every mammal on the planet needs to live. It becomes crystalline when it is exposed to extreme heat through volcanic activity or commercial manufacturing means. The type of Diatomaceous Earth used in swimming pool, and other, filtration systems is crystalline silica. Crystalline silica is extremely dangerous when inhaled or ingested. It is not biodegradable. Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth contains less than one half of 1% of crystalline silica and is considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe).

Bird and animal feed contain substances such as molasses that cause the particles to become “sticky.” It forms clumps that not only make the feed hard to pour, but also to become moldy. FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR®, mixed in the feed, coats each particle making it difficult for the particles to stick together. This allows the feed to “flow” better and its absorption ability protects it from mold. No mold means less wasted feed. By separating the particles of feed, the animal’s digestive enzymes are able to completely surround each particle. This allows for a more complete digestion. The animal gets more benefit from his feed and the farmer more benefit for his feed dollar.

FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® anti-caking agent is to be mixed at a rate not to exceed 2% of the dry weight of the rations. This means, when mixing, in every one hundred pounds of feed, 2 pounds of feed is replaced by 2 pounds of FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® . All regulated products are sold by the information on the label. FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® is OMRI listed.

postheadericon What is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous Earth is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called Diatoms. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth, and serve as the basic food for aquatic life, just as grass is the basic food for land animals.

What is Codex or “Food Grade” Diatomaceous Earth?
For Diatomaceous Earth to be called “Codex,” it must meet the following requirements:

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth DE

Perma-Guard DE is what I use. I get it from EarthWorksHealth

postheadericon I Use Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth

Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is EPA approved and registered for use against indoor and outdoor crawling insects, including cockroaches, ants, bedbugs, fleas, boxelder bugs, carpet beetles, centipedes, crickets, earwigs, grasshoppers, ticks, millipedes, scorpions, slugs, and silverfish. For use in Cracks, Crevices, Hiding and Running Areas, Under and Behind Appliances, and Wall and Floor Surfaces. For use in and around homes, office buildings, restaurants, motels, warehouses, theaters, schools, hotels, and food handling establishments.

DE is odorless and nontoxic.

Indoor and Outdoor Application: Sprinkle a light layer of DE in areas where pests frequent, including under stoves, cabinets, sinks, garbage cans, window and door frames and sills, entrance ways, sewer pipes and drains, and in cracks and crevices. Repeat treatment as needed.
For Carpet Beetles: Thoroughly dust along baseboards, carpet edges, under furniture, carpet, and rugs, and in closets and shelving.
For Bedbugs: Take apart bed and dust joints and channels. Dust any hollow tubing and the interior framework as well as the mattress and all cracks in the room.
For Fleas: Thoroughly dust carpets and pet’s bedding and sleeping areas, as well as cracks and baseboards. It also can be rubbed into your pet’s fur.
For Flies: Thoroughly dust areas where flies frequent (walls, straw bedding, livestock pens). It also can be applied to livestock coat as an insect repellent/contact insecticide.

DE is composed of finely milled fossilized shells of minuscule organisms called diatoms. The microscopically fine, sharp edges desiccate the insects’ exoskeleton upon contact and the pests dehydrate and die within hours. The insects also die when they eat the dust.

DE Diatomaceous Earth

Perma-Guard™ is the original and largest supplier of fresh water, food grade Diatomaceous Earth products for agricultural use in the world.

What is Diatomaceous Earth

Perma-Guard, with more than 40 years of experience, is the company known world wide for using a grade and quality of Diatomaceous Earth that is extremely pure. It was important to have a consistent shape diatom and no unwanted sediment. The shape of the diatom must be tubular with holes on the walls. It must be fresh water because the diatoms form a harder shell and is less fragile that those in salt water. Salt water deposits contain a mix of diatom species. These deposits shapes and sediments are inconsistent making them unusable for our products.

DE Diatomaceous EarthOut of 600 deposits in the US only 4 are considered “Food Grade” by the FDA standards. Other food grade deposits may contain higher amounts of sediment and clay that make them less effective. Depending upon how the deposits were formed, clay particles may be present in sufficient quantities to clog the pores of the fossilized shells. If this is the case, the effectiveness of the Diatomaceous Earth is severely reduced. We have analysis of many other “Food Grade” deposits and are satisfied that we still obtain the Diatomaceous Earth for our products from the purest fresh water source.

Perma-Guard products use Diatomaceous Earth, mother natures eco-friendly naturally organic material. Our products fit into the “Living Green” lifestyle. Actually, Diatomaceous Earth is not an earth. It is the fossilized remains of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called DIATOMS. Not all deposits of Diatomaceous Earth diatoms present in those deposits are the same. Perma-Guard’s FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® is a very pure form of Diatomaceous Earth used as an anti-caking feed additive.

postheadericon How do you eat dirt?

I think the number one question I get about my dirt is….    How do you eat it?

I have heard people put it in orange juice, coffee, mix it in milk.
Sprinkle it on peanut butter and on popcorn, I have even heard
people put it in pancake mix.
Diatomaceous earth looks just like flour and it has the same
consistency. I either put it in my protein shake that I whip using
a hand held blender or I stir it into yogurt.
There is no taste to it and the blender that I use takes just a couple
of seconds to mix my shake creamy smooth. I would never know I was
eating dirt.
How do you eat yours?
