postheadericon The Bible About Diatomaceous Earth

miss dirt 2I bet you can tell that I love this wonderful stuff called Diatomaceous Earth, DE for short. It is indeed one of Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secrets. I am forever posting about the benefits of this wonderful product and I never miss an opportunity when speaking to someone to tout the many wonderful things it can be used for if the conversation just happening to go that way.

The only kind of DE that I speak about is FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth…. This is NOT the kind that is used for your pool….. I do not speak about DE that has had something added to it to kill bugs. In my humble opinion… there is no need to buy any other kind of DE for pesticide control than FOOD GRADE DE….. I only have 1 kind in my home and that is the FOOD GRADE DE.. I never have to worry about getting the kind I am able to eat myself with the other kind that I would sprinkle around to control bugs since I only have 1 kind.

I always buy my DE in 50# bags….. You may think that is a lot, but think of it this way….. It will never go bad as long as you keep it dry..after all… it is as old as dinosaurs… if not older.  Split that 50# bag with a neighbor or a family member…. it is the most economical for shipping charges as well.

I will get personal messages asking my opinion on one kind of DE or another…. I do not feel comfortable talking about another product other than the one that I promote….. Your not able to buy it in the store I always send people to their website…… I buy my DE from Earth Works Health.

Earth Works Health also offers a wonderful book written by Tui Rose… she has put together a wealth of information in her book Solutions For Healthy Living….Yes, it is true they is a lot of information on the internet about this wonderful product. BUT>>> this book has it all in one place… easy to read and easy to find what your looking for.

So head on over to Earth Works Health and order a 50# bag of Food Grade diatomaceous earth.. and the Bible about DE by Tui Rose… Solutions for Healthy Living

postheadericon That Was Some POOP

bubble-1013915__180I received an interesting question in a personal message on my Facebook page….. It was pretty graphic so I will just sort of do a recap of it…. please note it still may be a bit graphic for some.

The reader had just started taking diatomaceous earth.. and it sounds to me like they probably didn’t start out slowly and work their way up but rather just took a huge spoonful right off the get go… which of course is a no no. Not to mention I do not think that they had increased their water intake either….

They had taken the DE in the am…. the next morning they had such an urge to go to the bathroom that they didn’t quite make it and even had pooped a bit in their panties.. which of course is never a good thing. The reader went onto say that she just felt at least a weeks worth of poop exiting her body. She did say that there was never a painful feeling but it was such a relief to expel what she thought must of been gathering for a very long time. After she was done she was not able to resist the urge to look at what had come out of her body so she looked at the poop before she flushed it away…

What she saw was not only a HUGE amount of poop but it contained what looked like tiny pebbles/seeds/ something that she was not able to recall eating anything at all like that. She went onto say for the rest of the day she kept thinking about that bowel movement.. one like she had never had before and having the feeling of being so “cleaned out”.

I didn’t know quite how to respond to what was not really a question but an experience. I replied back that I thought she had started out taking to much and had not drunk enough water…. with a few other strong words about don’t do that again….

Anyway my reason for telling you about this is to ask you a question…..What was relayed to me got me thinking about how DE works as a colon cleaner. I have always said that if taken properly you will never need a laxative. When your colon is clean your entire body should work better… that has always made sense to me…….

But what got me thinking was how she described what had come out of her body….. Where in the world did that stuff come from, how long had it of been inside?…. I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with having diverticulitis and using DE.  I am certainly not a medical Dr. and I really don’t know a huge amount about diverticulitis but I do know how diatomaceous works. Anyone care to share their thoughts about that?

postheadericon Diatamaceous Earth and Hemochromatosis

phlebotomy

For years I had tried to get my friend Karen to try diatomaceous earth.  She finally took that leap of faith and tried it….. she is very happy that she did. She posted about what happened when she did…. You can read the post below.
————————————————————————————–

First things first – you need a working definition:

Hemochromatosis:

Is a genetic disorder wherein the body of the person affected holds onto iron consumed resulting in iron overload.  Iron accumulates in the joints and organs and will most certainly cause death if allowed to do so.  Treatment is frequent (usually weekly) therapeutic phlebotomy (blood draining) until iron levels (ferritin) are normal, and then an ongoing maintenance and monitoring schedule  for life.  In some ways it is a blessing in disguise because hemochromatosis patients in maintenance can become regular blood donors keeping themselves healthy while saving the lives of others.  A silverlining to be certain.

However, I can assure you from experience that the initial regime is NOT pleasant.  I have scar tissue on my arm from the frequent phlebotomies that makes me look like somewhat of a junkie.  Appearance aside, there are other unpleasant side effects to having such frequent blood drains, the least of which is the inconvenience.  Unless you enjoy needles in your arm – and this is a big needle (my sister calls it a pipe), you can agree that frequent phlebotomies are something to avoid if you can.

My doctor told me there was no other way.  The only way to lower the iron stores in your blood is to remove the blood.  It is truly not possible to eat a low iron diet although most of us do try to limit our intake of iron and we usually drink tea or coffee with our meals to interfere with iron absorption.

A Little Background Info

A dear friend of mine from a small town in Michigan sent me a sample of Diatamaceous Earth, known simply as DE, to treat a bug infestation of a houseplant.  When I failed to use it and the plant died, she encouraged me to eat it myself claiming it has numerous health benefits.  I was certainly skeptical of eating the product that was sent to me to kill bugs, but after I did some research on it, I decided to give it a try… it is worth noting that this stuff sat in my cupboard for 2 years before I finally took a spoonful!

During my trial period, I can’t say that I actually noticed any improvement in my overall health.  I’m not saying that I didn’t experience better health, just that I didn’t feel it.  My ferritin had been below 50, and I had become a regular blood donor.  Either just prior to just after donating blood I get a blood test to measure my level.

On February 14, before I started taking DE, and after a blood donation, my ferritin was 44.  Acceptable.  I was scheduled for another donation 56 days later on March 28, but I wasn’t able to make it to my appointment.  I was worried that my ferritin would be soaring and that I may require a therapeutic phlebotomy in addition to a blood donation.  I went for a blood test to measure my ferritin in mid April.  I had now been consuming DE daily for about 3 weeks.  This is where things got interesting…

3 Weeks on DE and No Blood Donation…

I was shocked (and a little frightened) when I learned that my ferritin had dropped 6 points to 38 – without having shed any blood!

Where Did The Iron in My Blood Go?

My doctor had no explanation.  An ultrasound and other tests did not reveal any internal bleeding – which was my (and my doctor’s) fear.  I went online and started searching for an explanation.  What I found was that some people are using DE for chelation purposes – to remove heavy metals, such as mercury, from the body.  If it can remove mercury why not iron?  DE was the only thing that I had added to my routine.  I decided to stay off the DE for a month and retest.  If my ferritin went up, that should be an indication that it was likely the DE that brought it down.

And the Result is in…

On May 23, I had my ferritin tested and it had gone back up to 48.  Once again, my body is holding onto iron.  Now, if I was bleeding internally, or otherwise, there is no way that my ferritin would go up by such a large amount in one month.

I am now back on DE – day 2.  In 3 weeks I will retest and see if my iron drops again and will report the results here.

If you or someone you know has hemochromatosis, try it or share this post with them!

Diatamaceous Earth has many other health benefits

It addresses issues by removing toxins from the body.  Here is a partial list of issues addressed by eating DE:

  • Bacteria
  • Parasites
  • Fungi
  • Protozoa
  • Viruses (including poliovirus)
  • Endotoxins
  • Pesticide and drug residues
  • E-Coli
  • Heavy metals (including methyl mercury)
  • Proteinaceous toxins produced by some intestinal infections

While dealing with the above toxins, DE will NOT harm the beneficial bacteria (flora) in the gut.  I am no chemist, but the reason that it leaves the healthy stuff alone has to do with negative and positive charge.

It is also reported to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.  My blood pressure was quite high.  It is now in the normal range, but I cannot say for 100% that it is due to taking DE.  I am also taking Ubiquinol – which I believe is having a positive impact on my BP… more on that in another post!

This is where my friend gets her DE:

postheadericon Diatomaceous Earth is NOT a Detox

Scrub Brush 02I hear many people say they use diatomaceous earth as a detox. I do not think that statement is entirely true… there is just so much more to it than that.
This is the definition I got about Detox…
Detoxification=removal of toxic substances from a living organism

I have always had a very good imagination… at times it works overtime. I can see this picture I am going to describe for you very  clear in my mind. I wish I were an artist so I could draw you what I am seeing…

When you eat diatomaceous earth on a regular basis it is like a little man with a soft scrub brush scrubbing away on the inside of your digestive tract. He very patiently scrubs on the inside of your intestines day after day. He is using a soft brush so not to hurt you in anyway. Softly scrubbing day after day he is removing all of the yucky stuff that has been building up and sticking to the walls of your digestive track.

Not to freak you out…. but I think it might be the same principal as using drain cleaner on those slow running drains in your home. The drain cleaner works the same as that little man…. scrubbing the built up yuck from the inside of your drains so they are no longer run SLOW.

If your intestines don’t have all of that built up yuck on the walls your body is able to absorb the nutrients it needs. About 70% of your immune system is located in your digestive track. If your gut is clean it makes the whole process work better. As if that was not enough when you eat diatomaceous earth the honey comb shape of it traps and carry things out of your digestive track.

Diatomaceous earth is so much more than a detox.. eating DE on a regular basis causes a ripple effect that starts in your gut and helps every part of your body. DE is one of Mother Natures miracles indeed.

To Your Good Health!

postheadericon Perma-Guard FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR®

DE Diatomaceous Earth

All Diatomaceous Earth is not the same.

Where can I find Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth packaged under our FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® label comes from an extremely pure fresh water deposit of the diatom Aulacoseira from a deposit created in the Miocene epoch. Why is this diatom so special? Its shell is made of amorphous silica. Its shape and hardness are important to how it works. Its hardness keeps it from dissolving in liquid. The holes along the diatom’s wall allow it to absorb moisture, hence its use as an anti-caking agent. Darker colored Diatomaceous Earth often contains an excess of a particular mineral such as iron or a high percentage of clay.

FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® is almost pure white and consists of 89% ( and sometimes more) Silicon Dioxide plus 28 trace minerals which means more diatom surface area is available. More diatom area means greater absorptive capacity and more improvement in the mixability and flowability of animal feed. FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® does not swell, does not absorb nutrients and poses no long term hazard when used as an anti-caking agent in your animal’s feed.

What is Diatomaceous Earth

Why fresh water vs. salt water Diatomaceous Earth?

Fresh water deposits like ours have a consistent diatom presence. Their fossilized shells have maintained their tubular shape. This shape and strength of the fossil shell is critical to its effectiveness. Our deposit has 89 – 95 percent amorphous silica content. This deposit is also more consistent in its purity of other elements that have settled in it. A fresh water deposit is confined to the run off water of its surrounding environment. A fresh water deposit in the mountains, such as ours, formed when snow was pure and its run off provided the water source these diatoms lived in. Salt water deposits contain a mix of types of diatoms of different shapes. Their fossilized shells are fragile and break easily. This renders them ineffective for our purposes. The salt water deposits are less predictable in their sediments.

What’s the difference between amorphous and crystalline silica?

Where can you buy Diatomaceous Earth

Amorphous (click here for definition) silica is silica in its natural occurring state. It is a trace mineral every mammal on the planet needs to live. It becomes crystalline when it is exposed to extreme heat through volcanic activity or commercial manufacturing means. The type of Diatomaceous Earth used in swimming pool, and other, filtration systems is crystalline silica. Crystalline silica is extremely dangerous when inhaled or ingested. It is not biodegradable. Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth contains less than one half of 1% of crystalline silica and is considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe).

Bird and animal feed contain substances such as molasses that cause the particles to become “sticky.” It forms clumps that not only make the feed hard to pour, but also to become moldy. FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR®, mixed in the feed, coats each particle making it difficult for the particles to stick together. This allows the feed to “flow” better and its absorption ability protects it from mold. No mold means less wasted feed. By separating the particles of feed, the animal’s digestive enzymes are able to completely surround each particle. This allows for a more complete digestion. The animal gets more benefit from his feed and the farmer more benefit for his feed dollar.

FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® anti-caking agent is to be mixed at a rate not to exceed 2% of the dry weight of the rations. This means, when mixing, in every one hundred pounds of feed, 2 pounds of feed is replaced by 2 pounds of FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® . All regulated products are sold by the information on the label. FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR® is OMRI listed.

postheadericon Why does diatomaceous earth NOT kill the good bacteria in the gut?

I got a very interesting question the other day on my Facebook Page The question was….why doesn’t diatomaceous earth kill the beneficial bacteria in the gut.

The statement “DE does NOT kill the beneficial bacteria in the gut” can be found on many websites. But finding out the “WHY” does it NOT also kill the good bacteria took a bit of digging.

I found the answer by reading many different website and articles and I ending up submitting a different search term to Google with the information that I found. (What did we do before the internet… Thank You Al Gore) I put in the search box… “does bad bacteria have a negative or a positive charge” ?

I found my answer…….

Diatomaceous Earth will not absorb beneficial bacteria simply due to the fact that DE has a negative charge and bad bacteria has a positive charge. DE will attract and absorb the bad bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc without harming anything good or beneficial.

Before I had found the answer by myself I had sent off this “WHY” question in an email to a friend of mine, Tui Rose who wrote a wonderful book, The Diatomaceous Earth Book “Going Green Using Diatomaceous Earth How-To Tips”. It contains a wealth of information. This was her reply to me…

I did not address that issue in my Going Green DE book although I had heard the same answer you found. The angle of negative and positive polarity is true. I’ve not seen any other answer, but in my next book I am going to place this answer along with the daily supplementation of probiotics. If the body is depleted of good bacteria for any one of many reasons including the use of antibiotics DE does not replace probiotics, so it is still wise to use probiotics anyway.

My next book on DE will include a chapter on Human Ingestion. Should be available in 3-4 months

I for one can hardly wait for this book…. I have so many people asking for more information about the health benefits of using DE.. and being a registered nurse I am certain that Tui Rose will have the information thoroughly researched.

I found this video on a site called Silalive.. It is not very long, and I have not ever heard anyone pronouns diatomaceous earth quite like she does…. It contains great information and sort of addresses the original question that was ask about the “WHY”

postheadericon Studies Done About Diatomaceous Earth by Red Lake Earth

I love chickens. They are such fun to have around. I have been reading a lot about adding diatomaceous earth (DE) to their feed and also letting them enjoy it as a dust bath will make for much “Happier Chickens.”

Happy Chickens means better looking chickens, more eggs production, just all around healthier/Happy Chickens.  Red Lake Earth did several studies about the benefits of adding DE to chicken feed. The results of the study was very interesting, in fact after reading the studies I would hope that everyone who raises any number of chickens from 1 to a zillion should be adding this wonderful, all natural product that is indeed good for every one and every thing.

The first study I would like to post was done by….

RED LAKE EARTH ……Effect on Bone Mineralization

Previously we showed that free-range hens fed diets supplemented with diatomaceous earth (DE) were significantly heavier, laid more eggs, and consumed more feed than hens fed the control diet, with no differences in feed efficiency. In the present study….. you can read the entire study here.
www.absorbentproductsltd.com/Red-Lake-Diatomaceous-Earth-Bone-Mineralization-Study.pdf

Red Lake Earth did another study called Effect of Dietary Diatomaceous Earth and a Single Topical Application of llarn Fresh on House Fly, Musca domestica L., Breeding, Egg Quality and Selected Manure Nutrients. Now that is quite the title for a subject but the jest of the whole thing is…… Using DE on the chickens and around the their living quarters cuts down on flies…. amongst other interesting findings. Your able to read the entire study here.
www.absorbentproductsltd.com/Red-Lake-Diatomaceous-Earth-House-Fly-and-Egg-Quality-Study.pdf

I found both of these studies very interesting and they contain documented proof that using diatomaceous earth is indeed very beneficial.

postheadericon Avoid Bringing Bed Bugs Home

The first step to keeping bed bugs out of the house is NOT to bring them home in the first place. That may seem like a silly statement but if you were on a vacation and you think that you may have been exposed to bed bugs this video will show you what to do to avoid an infestation in your home.
